Procrastination tips and help

Hello! I’m new here, and recently got diagnosed with ADHD late last Winter. I’ve been having LOADS of trouble keeping my apartment, car, and life. Tonight (20th), I saw an ad for an app called Today Is The Day, and it said it would help with procrastination, but you have to pay for it.

First, are there any apps like that that are totally free? Second, any tips/tricks on managing procrastination?
Thanks in advance!

Hey Shirley,
My name is Merl and I’m a member of the modsupport team here on Ben’s Friends. In my former life, before my own health nose dived, I worked with people with disabilities, teaching them independent living skills and this included motivation (and reducing procrastination). One of our first steps was trying to identify the ‘Why?’ Why there was a lack of motivation? was there a physical limitation? ie lack of energy. Was there a lack of priority? ie Not seeing the need. Was there a lack of recognition/reward?

From here we could work on a plan for that individual client to address their issues. Now, I say ‘individual’ because everybody’s drive or reason to reach a goal is different and the method of reaching that goal is also very individual. So, for somebody to say ‘I have the answer’ is quite wrong as your motivation to achieve could be rather different to mine. Because of this some self identifying and introspection is required. Can you identify in yourself, why? If you can, then you can start to make a plan for yourself to identify and adjust certain behaviours and routines to pull yourself out of those pathways.

There are a few sites that have differing resources and tools that you can use (for free) to assist on your journey. Here are a few:
-How to Stop Procrastinating With 25 Tools
-Procrastination Self-Help Resources - Information Sheets & Workbooks
-10 apps to help you end procrastination and smash your to-do-lists | Time For You
-Procrastination - How To Overcome Procrastination
-The Simple Tool I Use to Overcome Procrastination

I’ve listed a few because what may work wonders for one person maybe of very little assistance to another, so it really can be a case of trial and error to establish what works best for you. You may find it better to mix’n’match a few differing ideas to meet your specific needs, so think of these as more ideas than rules.

Hope it helps
